Finding Your Personal Style
Finding your personal style is all about getting to know yourself on a deeper level.
Though style may be universal it is also very subjective, catering to everyone’s own individuality. After all, it is through clothing, makeup, accessories, and hairstyle, which we embrace our creative expression.
Why is personal style important? Imagine a place in which everyone wore the same clothes, had the same haircut, the same sense of style, and liked the same type of things. There would be no individual style or self expression. A personal style not only allows you to stand out in a crowd, but will also leave you feeling more comfortable and confident.
When it comes to fashion, personal style may seem like it holds no importance, but many first impressions are based directly from ones clothing and self-presentation. If you are unsure of what your current style is, it best to first assess the items you have in your wardrobe. There are many different style personas, by separating your items into like trends you can identify your current style.
Still not sure what your personal style is?
There are five universal styles. Each of us fit into one if not two or three of this style trends, making our resulting personal style unique to each individuals taste. Take a look at the universal styles below to see just where you might fit in.
Through this trend, a statement of friendliness and energy is made. Not to be confused with athletic wear, sporty is a more natural look that is both minimalistic and casual. There are many brands that represent sporty within their style. For instance Banana Republic, American Eagle Outfitters, and Lacoste, just to name a few.
This traditional style sends a message of dependability and loyalty. Basics of a business style include a neat and tidy appearance, clothing in natural and dark tones, and items such as skirts, blouses, and classic linen knit dress pants. Think Clavin Klein and Ralph Lauren.
A fashion of elegance communicates confidence and timelessness that is soft and romantic. This style exhibits and amplifies modest femininity. Clothing that is of a feminine shape, light pastel colors, and of soft fabric fit this category. Brands that exemplify a feminine style are Valentino, Chanel, and Anthropologie.
This trend sends a message of originality. Often those who have a playful style take risks with their wardrobe and are a bit creative with styling and allow no limitations. This quirky style is apparent in brands such as Urban Outfitters, Nicole Miller, and Jean Paul Gautier.
Remember personal style is important, but your style shouldn’t be defined by any one set trend. Explore other fashions and have fun with them. Wear something that makes you feel good and reflects who you are. After all, fashion is all about embracing our self expression in a creative way.
