Style Quotient | Do You Bamboo?

In my quest for stylish, affordable, and sustainable fashion, I've come to realize that bamboo is the way of the future. Using bamboo to make clothes and other goods is not a new concept but it's certainly not as mainstream as it could or should be.

Why bamboo?

Bamboo is an incredibly fast growing, renewable resource that produces super soft, absorbent fabrics and extremely durable wood products. Bamboo takes in more greenhouse gases and emits more oxygen than the equivalent measure of trees, making the plant a valuable element in creating great products while keeping environmental needs in mind.

Bamboo products have been gaining popularity over the years, primarily in household items such as cutting boards, table wear and serving pieces, bathmats, towels, bedding, and flooring. Recently though, much to my delight, I've seen stylish clothing options and luxurious beauty products emerge.

Yala Designs, a clothing company committed to social and eco-responsibility, is on the forefront of bamboo style. Their Bamboo Dreams line is 95% viscose from bamboo and 5% Spandex—making the pieces soft, stretchy, and cozy. The Sophie Short Wrap can be worn to yoga class, over a dress at the office, or with jeans for a casual but pretty weekend look. The Izzy Dress can be belted, worn in warmer months with sandals or in the colder months with tights or leggings, and accessorized with jewelry and scarves to create different looks

Girls Gone Organic feels it's ironic to practice healthy lifestyle techniques such as yoga while wearing petroleum-based clothing. So, they strive to maintain a high sense of style while keeping Mother Earth in mind. As an added bonus, all of their products are made in the USA.

Their Ready to Wear and Active Collections are a bit more fashion forward with stylish bamboo T-shirts and dresses as well as yoga gear.  The GGO Bamboo Wrap Dress is a stunner—especially in Navy or Pomegranate—and is a closet staple every girl should own.

Gaiam, long known for their yoga and pilates clothing, equipment, and DVDs, has broken into the style category with many eco options. Bamboo styles include 4 pocket Straight Leg Pants, a beautifulLace Applique Tank, and better-than-basic Dolman Cardigan Sweater.

The proliferation of bamboo-based beauty products is absolutely thrilling!

Alterna Hair Care's bamboo-based shampoo & conditioner helps to strengthen and smooth hair and the Kendi Dry Oil Mist works to eliminate frizz and protect strands from heat styling.

Tay's natural and organic beauty products are housed in 100% bamboo bottles and jars and are beautiful additions to your vanity.

Physician's Formula Bamboo Wear Bamboo Compact, Mirror and Brush holds refills of Bamboo Wear Bamboo Silk Face Powderor Bronzer. The empty product refill pans can be recycled and the beautiful and functional compact reused for years to come.

Keep your eyes peeled for more bamboo products to enter the marketplace and help to support the companies taking extra measures to create healthy products for their consumers.  The commitment from these brands to sustainable beauty and style and eco-friendly practices makes shopping for and wearing their clothing and applying their cosmetics a delight for eco-minded fashionistas and product junkies everywhere!
